Loving

Love is a key to someone’s heart.

It’s not just a toy to play with,

It’s something special to everyone.

You might be thinking it’s not…

But I promise you, it makes you feel special.

Some people might not even realize it.

Its a mystery waiting to be solved,

  Or you could say

Its a question waiting to be answered.

 When you love someone,

You get tinglies in your stomach.

   It sometimes makes you wonder

  “Am I good enough?”,

    “Am I worth it?”

       “Do they love me?”

    If you ask yourself that,

      Maybe you should ask them…

Maybe you could question yourself,

                “Why am I questioning myself…”

You must love yourself before anyone,

   And anything. ❤

Remember, someone     Will Always love you.

Life Without My Little Sister

By: Dom P.

If I lived my life without my little sister I probably wouldn’t be the same. I love her with all my heart but she gets annoying and VERY LOUD! She always asks me to play with her and I’m up to it but then she says barbies or horses so then I say later and refuse to play with her once that “later” time strikes. When she actually chooses a game we both want to play like Pop the Pig and I win, she becomes a sore loser and throws hard objects at me like one of the burgers.

My little sister, Madeline, is actually a very good student in school which is surprising by what it sounds like, but she’s a very good little sister and a very good child. She absolutely LOVES UNICORNS and LOL DOLLS. She also LOVES SANTA and if I told her that Santa and unicorns weren’t real she would probably kill me. Whenever she is being bad I say that Santa is going to bring her coal and then she says NOOOOO STOP IT and I just laugh. I know I’m just trying to get a reaction but then she laughs it off.

A few times she has gotten surgery for her ears and more. When she gets surgery I get worried and pray for her about 5 times a day. She has had 2 surgeries; 1 was to get tubes put in her ears and the other surgery was to get more tubes put in her ears and get her adenoids taken out. I also get worried for her when she goes to school because of this terrible world we live in.

Even though she is in a building on the same campus as me, I still get worried. Sometimes I get jealous of her because she only has 3 hours of school and I have about 7 hours but she’s in kindergarten, so I have to accept my fate. So after all I love my little sister and if I lived without her I would be a totally different person.

Esports

I believe that having an Esports Club for our school would be beneficial for multiple reasons. Number one is that kids like me don’t have an interest or want to participate in sports but have an interest in gaming. Two, It would give us something to look forward to and a way to help keep our grades up. When I say club I really mean a class that you can sign up to take and raise your grade due to how well you can work as a team. Esports is starting to become a career that you can make millions off of and become famous. We can become extremely successful by playing competitive video games. I think it would be great to take into consideration that a competitive Esports class could help out a lot of students in becoming successful in life.

Allentown

By: Dom P.

You’ll come into an old town that used to be known as the Million Dollar Town. Beyond the graffiti take a left. Then beyond the old repair shop take a right. Once you’ve done that follow the depressing road till you see a cul de sac with yellow houses. That’s where I lived till I was about 1. I would describe Allentown as if it was as old as the dirt on this earth: vines on houses, ugly wallpaper, ugly colored cabinets, and old people.

When I lived in Allentown I was living with my grandparents and actual parents. Keep in mind that my mom was 18 when she had me so she didn’t have her own house yet and didn’t know much about parenting. I lived there until I was 1. When I turned 1 we moved to Lancaster. My dad was mostly working so me and my mom would go to the mall, park, or bowling. When we were done doing fun activities we would go get lunch. We called them lunch dates because it was just us. My dad worked about 2 hours away at a place called Fedchem. He was going to be in the air force but decided not to go because I was born. When my mom was at work and my dad was home I would have to go with him to his work, but he would drop me off at my grandparents so I was fine with it. When I was about 6, everytime we went to visit my grandparents I would have so much fun with their dogs Toby and FooFoo. FooFoo died when I was 7 but Toby is still alive to this day. He is old and having breathing problems but we think it’s because of him getting abused by his previous owners when he was a puppy. We have him now because my aunt stole him from their house. The thing that sucked was when we left because I would be balling my eyes out and screaming bloody murder. Now that I’m 12 I don’t do that anymore but it’s still sad when I have to leave. And that’s my back story of where born. What’s yours?

 Back Story of Allentown/Catasauqua

Jiffy

Once upon a time, there was a little kernel named Jiffy. He lived in the local Weis Market with his family the Pops. One day their bag started rumbling and tumbling. They hit the ground with a ting as they hit the bottom of the shopping cart of none other than Edward the terrible. He was known for eating tons of popcorn. He was the man every kernel feared. He took Jiffy and his family to his dreaded apartment where they were set down in the cabinet waiting to be cooked. Jiffy was scared and didn’t know what to do when it was his bags turn for dinner. Now it was dinner time and the bag was picked up and opened. Jiffy thought he was doomed but when the bag opened he fell out and plopped on the counter. Edward was too busy watching the bag of popcorn being cooked that Jiffy had enough time to get up and run. He was hiding behind the recipe book when he realized there was an old napkin that was sitting there. He picked the old napkin up and thought of all the things he could do with it. He had already decided on one thing though, skydiving. He took the old napkin tied it around him and jumped off the counter. He was getting closer and closer to the ground when the napkin opened up with a woosh. He floated safely to the ground and thought it was fun.

The Return

Chapter 1

By: Thumper

It’s been five years since the disappearance of Cleo. Berkeley was learning how to write cursive letters which he has been stuck on for what felt like a week. There he sat in his assigned seat right by the aisle, he had a perfect view of the chalkboard. His pencil tried to keep up with what was on the board. The sound of all the pencils scraping against the paper aggravated him. He quickly began to focus on the noise, his grip on his pencil tightened. The sound grew louder in his ears, he looked around the classroom but everyone continued to write. He pushed harder on the paper, the sound grew unbearable. He was about to cover his ears when his pencil tip broke. The sound quickly vanished, relief washed over him. He glanced over to the pencil sharpener, he stood up and slowly walked along the aisle towards it. His feet began to grow heavy with every step he took, he wondered how no one could hear the banging of his foot hitting the ground. He realized that Madison wasn’t sitting at her regular seat, surely she couldn’t have gotten in trouble. Madison was always the type to stay out of trouble and obey whatever an adult told her. He stared at the desk, there he saw the name “Cleo” carefully scratched into the glazed oak wood. The faint voice of Miss. Kennedy asked a question quickly quieted the classroom. He stopped walking and looked up, Miss. Kennedy looked right at him.

“Cleo, how about you write the letters on the board.” The sound of his heartbeat echoed in his head. He hasn’t heard that name in years, he looked back just to see Cleo stand up and start walking down the aisle. The heartbeat quickened in his head it pierced through his brain. She was getting close, Berkeley stood stationary waiting for her to smile but instead passed right through him. The sound overtook him, he felt like he was about to collapse. He tried to grab onto something but right when his hand reached the side of the desk the door swung open. Startled, he blinks and appears in a hospital bed.

“How are you doing today, Berkeley?” Nurse Mary asked with a smile on her face. She sat near the footboard of the bed and gently placed a tray on his legs. It was the usual: soggy green beans, a scoop of instant mashed potatoes, some dry chicken drowning in gravy, and a styrofoam cup.

“The same as every other day. What time is it?” Berkeley murmured hoping he wasn’t hallucinating for too long. He watched as Nurse Mary filled the styrofoam cup with water and put his night pills on his tray: one white capsule, two light blue tablets, two dark red gel capsules, a gummy vitamin, and one he has never seen before.

“It’s about 7:30.” She could see the confusion on his face about the mystery pill. “It will help with the visions, I promise.” Berkeley has been experiencing hallucinations ever since the third grade, when he claimed that he saw Cleo in a black truck after collapsing on the ground. No one believed him and he grew to not believe what he saw, but in the back of his mind he knew Cleo needed help, wherever she was now. Sometimes he wonders what she looks like now, and if she knows he has been in and out of the hospital ever since he saw her in the truck. Berkeley and Cleo were best friends ever since they were born and were basically inseparable, but he never knew one note could break his heart. The note now hung in his hospital room after the police department gave up on the case, her perfect handwriting spelled out, “Don’t try and find me. I’m okay I promise.” There it was again, “I promise.” Those two words had no meaning to Berkeley anymore, but for other people, their lives depended on it.

“You said that about the other treatments. How am I supposed to believe you now?” Berkeley snapped.

“Berkeley, we’re trying everything we can.” Nurse Mary grabbed Berkeley’s trembling hand in hers. “We just have to hope.” She stayed with Berkeley until he finished his so-called meal.

“Goodnight Berkeley, get a good night’s rest.” She grabbed the medicine cart and slowly pulled it out of the room, making sure to not hit the door. Berkeley waited for about 10 minutes until he saw that all the lights in the hallway turned off. He quietly walked across the room and picked up the hourglass-shaped remote. The bed absorbed him once he sat down, the remote beeped as he pressed the power button. The TV flashed a red light across the room, words were going across the bottom of the screen. He read, “News Flash: Multiple schools closed due to a snowstorm.” A lady with brown curly hair appeared on the screen with a microphone, a big city was behind her.

“Right now the city of Portland, Maine is covered with snow, and just like the song, it doesn’t show signs of stopping.” She smiled and a screen popped up showing all of the schools. Berkeley’s eyes scanned the screen looking for Portland Middle School, he eventually found it. He ran to the small window, a fresh layer of snow covered the city. One day he would go to school with his friends. One day he would be filled with excitement when they announce school would be off. He would play with the neighborhood kids in the snow while his mom prepares hot chocolate for him. He slowly started to drift asleep as his thoughts consumed him. He has been stuck in this hospital for most of his life. None of the medicines were working, all they did was make him weak and tired. He had to leave, he didn’t know how, but he knew he had to do it. His eyes slowly closed as he fell fast asleep.

Garlic

Garlic has so much history. People use it for so many things. It was used in mythology, in medicinal history, and in many modern cooking recipes.

____HISTORY____

Garlic was used in stories and mythology. To repel vampires and to heal sick pepole.  Its close relatives include the onion, shallot, leek, chive, and Chinese onion. Garlic is native to Central Asia and northeastern Iran, and has long been a common seasoning worldwide, with a history of several thousand years of human consumption and use.

  ____Medicinal____

Today, claims for the health benefits of garlic include lower blood pressure and cholesterol, an anti-inflammatory effect, a reduced risk of cancer, and a stronger immune system. Long ago people thought you used garlic to clean your self, get rid of warts and bumps (got rid of cancer)  and people crushed it in order to apply it to the hair.

    ____Myths____

According to Pliny, garlic and onions were invoked as deities by the Egyptians at the taking of oaths. The inhabitants of Pelusium in lower Egypt, who worshipped the onion, are said to have held both it and garlic in aversion as food.

Egyptian slaves were given a daily ration of garlic, as it was believed to ward off illness and to increase strength and endurance. As indicated in ancient Egyptian records, the pyramid builders were given beer, flatbread, raw garlic and onions as their meager food rations. Upon threatening to abandon the pyramids leaving them unfinished, they were given more garlic. It cost the Pharaoh today’s equivalent of 2 million dollars to keep the Cheops pyramid builders supplied it with garlic.

______________other weird facts______________

Where did the name “Russian Penicillin” come from? During WWII, Russian soldiers ran out of penicillin and they literally started using crushed garlic in place of the medicine. That practice earned garlic its moniker.

School Adjustments

I think that we should start later for school because when we come in we are really tired in the morning because we start school really early and if we have a lot of homework then we have to stay up later. And a lot of kids play sports and if they have a game or something that doesn’t normally end till 8 or 9 o’clock at night which will make them more tired because they have to do other things before they can go home and sleep. If kids were able to sleep a bit longer it would probably help them with there school work so that they can pay attention to the teachers. Also by the time school ends kids are really tired and don’t feel like doing homework or anything else and in DA kids are really tired and just sit there and do nothing we should have a nap time so that kids are able to keep working at the end of the day instead of just sitting there and doing nothing. if kids got a nap time or got to come in later there wouldn’t as much trouble because when kids are tired they act worse or try to act silly and get themselves in trouble when all they need is a bit more sleep. The National Sleep Foundation found that teens need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to function best. The study found that most teens did not sleep enough due to school in the morning which can lead to teens not being able to pay attention to schoolwork and can cause teens to be more aggressive in the mornings and makes teens go to bed when they get home from school and skip dinner to go to sleep and not do homework and when teens have to go to school or be up at 5-6 o’clock in the morning they are not going to be able to handle it like if they play sports they are tired and can’t play their games or do any homework to be fair most teens don’t do their homework but still.

Chapter 2: Dehydration and Dead Dogs

”Nefertiti…?” The man asked clearly confused. ”Why are you trying to go? The party’s in here!!”

And with that, I was uncontrollably sobbing. I just wanted to go home, and I was willing to do anything to do so.

The man inevitably noticed my crying and offered me my gift, which just so happened to be some ice cold water.

“Nefertiti, don’t be sad. I have your present right here.” He hands me a box wrapped in a green bow, reminiscent of a forest of green trees, not like I’ve ever seen one of those before.

“Hopefully it’ll cheer you up a bit. And no worries about almost breaking my window, I know it was just a happy little accident.”

“Yes, definitely an accident.”, I think to myself and chuckle, leaving a puzzled look on the mans face.

“Well, anyways, it would be best if you drink up as soon as possible. You look very parched.” After he said that, I was chugging the canteen of water as fast as you could say, “ok, boomer”.

I suddenly have the formidable feeling of falling out of the sky. This reminds of when I was born. What the frick? Taking notice of my surroundings, I come to a realization. SHOOT. I’m in a desert. Well, that’s new. I stand up, curious of what I might see, but I trip on something and fall right back into the oven-like sand. I look at my feet and there’s a dog. Looking closer I see that its head isn’t connected to its torso. How cute!

After my daily sit-down-and-think-about-your-life-choices session, my stomach makes a loud gurgling noise. Weird. I remember just drinking some water, I shouldn’t be as famished as I am. Acting on the loud gurgling noises coming from my stomach, I start to almost fruitlessly roam the desert in search of any food I can scrape up.

As the sun sets, I trail through the desert, my feet drowning in the sand. Suddenly, I hear a growl, reminding me of that time in summer camp when I was attacked by a vicious raccoon, giving me one of the worst cases of rabies known to man.

I’m snapped out of my thoughts when I literally feel my ear being ripped off of my head and my body is jerked to the ground. I look down to the ground, the tan sand turning to a vibrant crimson red. Oh, it’s my blood. My vision turns blurry and the last thing I see is a middle-aged man, towering over me, one leg on each side of my body.
