Types of Animals in the Rainforest

The rainforest is home to many animals. Some animals in the rainforest are jaguars, sloths, ocelots, colorful birds, and many more. Rainforests can contain as many as 10 million different species of animals, plants, and insects.

The ocelot is a small wild cat that lives under the leafy canopies of the rainforests. They can also be found as far north as Texas. The ocelot is twice the size of a regular house cat and has black splotches that cover its whole body with a dappled coat. These cats will hunt rabbits, rodents, iguanas, fish, and frogs. They will also even hunt monkeys and birds in the trees. They also don’t avoid water like house cats and enjoy swimming. You can even buy an adult ocelot for a whopping $15,000! However, they wouldn’t make great pets because they are still wild animals that have wild  instincts in them. They can be very aggressive.

Toucans are a type of bird that live in the rainforest. Toucans have long colorful beaks that are used for mostly eating food or grabbing food off of trees. They live in flocks which means they live together with other toucans. Toucans have small wings that are not good for flying, and they can’t stay airborne for long. However this is not a problem for them because they hop between branches using their curved toes and sharp claws. Toucans can live up to 20 years in the wild,  but they do have predators. Their predators are Jaguars and other big cats.

Jaguars are a type of big cat that live in the rainforest. They are the third largest cat behind the lion and the tiger first. A jaguar has the strongest bite in the cat family with a force as much as 2,000 pounds of force. Their bite is strong enough to cut through a turtles shell. Instead of purring, jaguars roar. Purring is exclusive to jaguars as well as lions, tigers, and leopards. The jaguars lifespan is 15 to 20 years in the wild.  Unlike house cats, jaguars love to swim. Jaguars live and hunt alone except for when they mate.

Sloths are an animal that also live in the rainforest. Surprisingly they are excellent swimmers but clumsy on land. Their laziness is a survival tactic. Their slowness helps them go unnoticed by predators such as jaguars, ocelots, and harpy eagles. Sloths do just about everything in trees. Sloths can live up to 20 to 30 years in the wild.

Poison dart frogs are another animal in the rainforest. These amphibians are very colorful. Their colors range from yellow, gold, copper, red, green, blue, or black. They also have elaborate designs to ward off predators. However don’t be fooled by their bright colors. They are one of the most toxic animals on earth. Scientists are still unsure of how they develop their  poison. But it is possible it comes from a plant or something else. Interestingly when they are raised in captivity and isolated from insects in their native habitat they don’t develop the poison. In the wild poison dart frogs can live 3 to 15 years in the wild.
