Baseball in the Great Depression

By: Anna H.

Baseball, it was a very popular sport in the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Everyone liked coming to games all around the country, for some people it was pretty much the only outing they had. But that was only until the Great Depression hit and no one could go to the games because they couldn’t afford it. The only thing that people did now was working to get money  just have enough food on the table.

To get more fans to come to the major league games they dropped the ticket prices so people could afford to come. Sadly that didn’t help the problem and people still didn’t come to the games. Another attempt to get fans to come to the games was to start an all star game. The game was predicted to have a lot of fans attend the game. The people predicted that it would attract about 49,000 fans and they were right. Another way that they tried to get people to go to the games is they started night games. If people had radios then they could listen to the games because they started radio broadcasting. For some fans of baseball, listening to the radio was the only option the had if the wanted to listen to a baseball game. Some owners said that if they broadcast the games on radio then it decrease the attendance at games But that wasn’t the case. It actually helped the attendance at the games because it is said that it increased interest in the sport. These were some facts about baseball in the Great Depression.
