Hurricane Maria

By Leniel

Hurricane María was very bad for us.

What did you do to prepare for the hurricane?

We put a wooden board on all the windows. we put metal on the outside of the windows to hold the wood. see that when that happened before that we put it as a thing of those wooden is put with a screw For the stories that have a balcony, we just used wood on the sides of the because they did not have the concrete to attach the metal. We prepared lights, food, water, and batteries for when the power went off.

When I was there in Puerto Rico, the eye of the hurricane passed by my house. We had many family members staying in our house. We were in the living room when the window of my mother’s room exploded. I felt water in my mother’s room. I heard the window explode. My uncle used the bathroom door to cover it. The wood cracked and broke, but we got some windows to replace them from our neighbor.

How did you feel while the hurricane was happening?

I felt very scared.  I was scared when I saw it because it was so close and so loud. The hurricane started when we went to sleep. It was not too loud at the beginning. I heard the wind and the rain. it was heard very hard and very strong. The metal doors were banging. We stayed at home for one or two days. The hurricane left a mess everywhere. There was mud on the road and trees were sticking out. There was a mudslide in the valley down the mountain from my house.

We did not have lights for a long time. We had to go get water and bring it to our house. We had to wash with water from a bucket. People came with boxes of food.

We did not have school for one month. We went to my grandmother’s house to charge our lanterns and everything that we had.
